Our Story (The Rink Family)
Share
A long time ago... (6 years now) we got the nudge to move to this small town in Virginia and start our very first business.
My husband and I were visiting family for the holidays back in 2018 when the opportunity came to life.
After about a 9 hour car ride back to our home at the time, we decided to kick off this next chapter of our lives with our favorite phrase at the time "f* it, let's do it".
By February 2019 we had wrapped up, and packed up the remainder of our lives at the beach town we used to call home, and headed north.
“Instincts usually tell you what to do before your head has figured it out” (unknown)
That was certainly the case, because we had nothing figured out at the time. But we had the support of our family and friends and the community native to the place we would now call home and we couldn't have done it without them.
Roughly a year later, the world was swept off our feet with this thing we will call "C-19". This caused us and nearly every other entertainment business to close the doors or change the way we did business. We had to close for about 6 months. We kept our faith and trusted that things would work out for us, and they did!
During this time we grew our social media account, raised funds, and made it through until we opened back up! When we did, it just so happened that everyone and their mother had taken up roller skating in their 'down time' so business kept on rolling for us as usual.
It's now been FIVE years since that time and we've gained a lot of wisdom along the way. A couple take-aways for funzies...
1. I've learned that your small business reflects your own self-concept.
For any small business owner out there, maybe you need to hear this. If you're struggling with confidence and aren't happy with yourself, you will see that mirrored in people that aren't happy with your business. If you're struggling financially and stuck in a 'lack' mentality, your business will find ways to "never have enough". Likewise, the second that you heal and reprogram your own self-concept for success, you will see that mirrored in your small business. It does and is whatever you are.
You and your business are connected in ways you may not even realize!
2. I've learned that you cannot outgrow your mental limitations.
There have been many times when we'd see an increase in numbers one month or weekend, and then things would revert back to baseline. I'd gain maybe 100 followers in a month, and then 10 followers in the next 2 months...
It isn't until you increase (and potentially remove) the blocks in your own mind of what is or isn't possible, that you will be able to see physical, and permanent results in your business, and life.
You will never be able to outgrow your limitations. You must remove them first then you can grow and succeed so can your business.
3. I've learned that the motivation never comes, you have to do the hard things anyway.
I used to expect to do the 'hard things' when I got the motivation. I'd think of it as a wave that would just come over me allowing me to make improvements at the rink, grow the social media pages, get up early to make for additional time in the day to be productive, hit the gym, all the things.
In age, and wisdom, I've learned that the motivation doesn't just come, not for me at least. It doesn't really get 'easier' to wake up early, workout, spend hours growing the business, etc. your mental just gets stronger and you do it anyway! None of it is really 'easy' but it's rewarding when it's done. So just get done what you need to get done!
Hope you enjoyed my 'ted talk' and getting to know a little about our story.
We still probably don't know what we're doing (who does) but we're figuring it out as we go.
We are healthy, happy, and get to continue to grow a business we love. That's something that means a lot to us. So thank you to everyone that helped us grow, supported us when we needed it most, and chooses to follow us on this journey. Whether you come see us during public skate, book a party at our venue, or follow and engage with us on social media, we are grateful for you all. So THANK YOU and much love.
